Compaction of montmorillonite in ultra-dry state
نویسندگان
چکیده
The current study discovers that uniaxial compression under ambient condition can directly cause strong bonding in ultra-dry montmorillonite, which is attributed to the secondary molecular interaction other than hydrogen bonding. The strength of so-processed material is sensitive to the lateral confinement condition of loading. Similar compaction pressure produces equally strong solids between quasi-static and impact loading modes. Gas permeability of the compacted solids is comparable to those of dense rocks. These findings shed light on the study of Martian regolith and in-situ resource utilization. 2017 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Numerical Modelling of Dynamic Compaction in Dry Sandy Soils for Determination of Effective Print Spacing
Dynamic compaction (DC) is a widely used soil improvement method in dry and/or saturated soils. The design of DC treatment is usually carried out based on the past experiences and empirical relations. In order to clarify the ambiguities in DC processes, numerical modeling of DC in dry granular soils has been considered using a dynamic finite element code. Using the developed model, two design c...
متن کاملEffect of hydration state on the frictional properties of montmorillonite-based fault gouge
[1] We report on laboratory experiments examining the effect of hydration state on the frictional properties of simulated clay and quartz fault gouge. We tested four mixtures of Ca-montmorillonite and quartz (100, 70, 50, and 30% montmorillonite) at four hydration states: dry (<4.50 wt% water), one water interlayer equivalent (4.5–8.7 wt% water), two layers (8.7–16.0 wt% water), and three layer...

Internal erosion is the second major reason for earth dam's failure after overtopping. One of the effective factors in internal erosion in earth dams is the clay minerals used in dams as well as the effects of compaction efforts on soil in sample preparation. In this research, internal erosion and the effect of clay minerals and compaction effort on internal erosion were investigated. For this ...

Natural nanomaterial; Montmorillonite Clay was collected and purified and then applied in the removal of Fluoride. The Montmorillonite Clay was grounded and 150g was weighed and refluxed in 500mL 1MHCl at 1200C for one hour thirty minutes and activated Montmorillonite Clay was obtained. Flouride was determined with the aid of SPADNS Reagent (2-parasulfophenylazo)-1,8-dihydroxy-3,6-naphthalene d...
متن کاملChloritization of Montmorillonite by Its Coprecipitation with Magnesium Hydroxide
A magnesium hydroxide-montmorillonite complex prepared at an OH/Mg molar ratio of 2 (16 meq Mg/g clay) and immediately cleaned of any free Mg(OH)2 behaves like magnesium-chlorite and shows no change during 3 months ageing. Magnesium hydroxide completely precipitates within the interlayer space of montmorillonite. X-ray diffraction analysis, thermal (DTA and TGA) studies, i.r. absorption analysi...
